The Foundation manages eight different investment pools utilizing three different management approaches. The Foundation provides pools using a manager of managers approach, a static style management or a tactical style approach. Utilizing a ‘manager of managers’ approach, the Foundation employs SEI Investments Management Corporation to provide advisory and custodial services. A number of institutional portfolio managers have day-to-day responsibility of investing the pools in a manner appropriate to the market sector assigned. Each account with SEI can be invested in one of five asset allocation models. A static style manager uses a predetermined mix of assets, based on the investment objectives and risk tolerance of that fund. The General Board of Pensions utilizes a static style of management for its investment pools. A tactical style manager will fluctuate the asset mix of a given investment pool based on the prevailing market conditions and expectations of future growth. The United Methodist Social Principles and the Book of Discipline encourages churches and agencies to invest in funds screened for socially responsible investing practices. These include, but are not limited to, such things as excluding investments in corporations involved in the production or sale of alcohol, tobacco, pornographic, gambling or articles of war. The Foundation offers five options for socially screen investments. The SEI funds and the General Board of Pensions and Health Benefits funds are socially screened funds. An investor must consider the risk related to a particular investment opportunity as well as the returns on an investment in relation to the purpose of the funds being invested. The Foundation provides consultation with churches to assist in developing appropriate investment strategies.
